Nikkie asked for it and I listened!
We're going to kick off the PDF Monthy Contest with a poster design to promote your home town. Or to mix it up a little, choose a town where you don't live and make fun of it.
I'll go first. Believe it or not, Syracuse, N.Y. averages more snow per year than legendary Buffalo. "Why the heck do we live here?, I often ask myself. Well, crime is low, real estate and groceries are cheap, and everyone's got to live somewhere. Just thank your stars I don't live next door to you.
So get inspired and use any app(s) you like. I did this in Xara. The competition will be open until the end of June; June 1st I'll be posting another contest.
Ready, set, go!
My Best,
Gare

Very creative, very nice work, Nikkie! But if I might kibbutz...why not try a font other than Arial to dress up your work? Here, try one of mine. My Best, Gare

Hey I'm just getting my source images together today, and boy have I redicovered Brooklyn! Thanks Nikkie I think I'll get out and snap some photos over the summer. I've forgotten about all the history and events thru out this grand old borough. Well my idea for this months free for all cries out for illustrator (hope that's ok), So it'll take a little while

Hiya, Nitro-- Illustrator's fine; I'm big on converging applications and using anything short of a pointy stick and papyrus to get the job done. Brookyln's fantastic! 4th largest city and former home of the Dodgers (and Gabe Kaplan apparently grew up there)! Do it, and make your city proud of ya! My Best, Gare

Yeah Gare 100% Illy As far as homeland security goes, it's politics as usual, he probably gotten a trade off some where else. Cool design, but I'm a Yankee fan P.S. They already closed down the Navy yard and are threatening Fort Hamilton.

Hey, Nitro-- When I was an Art Director in Manhattan 1,000.3231 years ago, many of my friends lived in Jackson Heights and once we did a very extensive 7UP commercial on location at the Sparta (boxing) gym in Bed-Stuy. It was the only place that had authentic fast bags and other equipment for Sugar Ray to sit around and enjoy his beverage. So the Internet's indeed a small world, don'tcha think? As far as the Yankees go, I got an interesting piece of trivia to share: you and Nikkie are the only ones so far to post--you're a Yankees fan and Nikki'es from the Netherlands. Did you know that the Dutch actually gave us the name "Yankees"? Our settlers made fun of the immigrating Dutch, calling them Cheese Heads among other things. So to get even, the Dutch referred to all of us individually as "John Cheese". "Yan-keez"phoenetically...the "j" is soft. So do a Yankees T shirt for us! Nothing better on a hot summer day than paying $16 for two coneys and a beer, sitting in the bleachers behind home plate and then turning on your portable radio to actually hear what's going on My Best, Gare

Too funny, ronmatt-- For our non-US members, Halluburton to a large extent is taking care of supplies in Iraq while our middle-aged Reserve members are fighting evil. Here's some of the more interesting expenses they're submitting to our administration, who is actually paying them: Halliburton lodged 100 workers at a five-star hotel in Kuwait for a total of $10,000 a day instead of sleeping in tents, like soldiers, at $139 a night. They abandoned $85,000 trucks because of flat tires and similar critical unrepairable problems. Halliburton paid $100 to have a 15-pound bag of laundry cleaned as part of a million-dollar laundry contract in peaceful Kuwait. The price for cleaning the same amount of laundry in war-torn Iraq was $28. They spent $1.50 a can to buy 37,200 cans of soda in Kuwait, about 24 times higher than the contract price. Halliburton has Knowingly paid subcontractors twice for the same bill. If there were a World Cup for Wretched Excess, Halliburton takes the prize fer sure. Refills are free, I presume. On the flip side of things, Sears' CEO announced that for the next two years (which coincides with us electing a new administration) they'd pay all medical benefits to our Reservists and make up the difference in all benefits. By law, a company only has to hold the job open when a Reservist goes on tour. And all too frequently, businesses impose an in absentia pay cut. My Best, Gare

The May hometown promotion was fun! Here's the Awards: Best Spirit- to Nikkie. You entered twice and both the hometown and soccer cup designs are exceptional. Best Comic Relief-to ronmatt. I really like the fifa poster. The winner this month is Nitrobutler. We all can see and appreciate the effort and detail that went into your Brooklyn tourism poster! My Best, Gare
