Simple Xara tutorials

Postby Gare on Thu May 21, 2009 5:06 pm

Here's a Xara file you can download and finish, to celebrate the summer!

The file has a single shape, the Nautilus. Instructions are included in the file to add a texture via the Fill Tool, and then use the Bevel tool to round the edges and add a little drop shadow with the Shadow tool.

Have a ball!

My Best,

Gary

A little QuickShape editing

Postby Gare on Fri May 22, 2009 7:38 am

The QuickShape tool can be used to make symmetrical polygons, and also stars.

Although the drop-down menu on the Infobar tops off at 10 points, you can type in almost any number you like, and then hit Enter.

A QuickShape isn't directly editable with the Shape Editor until you remove its special properties by pressing Ctrl+Shift+S (think of "S" as "simplify").
And the Shape Editor tool can be used to lasso all the control points and make the path segments into curves.

Download this Xara file and celebrate the summer! ^2009!^

Under the Sea

Postby Gare on Fri May 22, 2009 3:41 pm

Download the zip file and open it in Xara. Then play with it, take it apart and see how it was done.

I'll post the answers (unless Maya gets here first!) on Saturday.

Get hooked!

So, were the pieces of the sea chest extruded and lined up by hand, or (as I suspect) was there some magic involved?

Nope, no magic, Mark.

I extruded the pieces, and then rotated them. By the way (tip here), for more precision than dragging on the face of an extrude to rotate it, use the fields and the slider to the right of it, as shown below.

Now, be forewarned that Neil at Xara told me that the extrude engine is a port over from Xara 3D, and as such was actually meant for extruding text. The Rotate 1, 2 and 3 guys? They do not relate to conventional X, Y, and Z axes you use in modelers when extruding shapes. Text, yes, more or less, but not shapes. Your best bet when you want to do a Z axis rotate is not to use the Extrude tool at all, but spin the already extruded shape using the Selector tool.

The other thing about extruding shapes is that you can hide and restore the extrude part by toggling the button at top left when the tool is in use and a shape is selected.
