2. With the Rectangular Marquee tool, hold Shift+Alt(Opt) and drag away from the center of the image until the selection looks like the one shown in figure 19.25. On the Channels palette, click on the Save selection as channel icon, and then press Ctrl(Cmd)+D to deselect the marquee.

Step 8 tells says to click on layer 1 to make it the current editing layer. Then, steps 10 & 11 have you using the Paintbrush tool to blend the trees with the sky. Wrong! Wrong! Layer 0 had to be selected in Step 8.

Click the Standard editing mode icon to the left of the Quick Mask icon. If the Channels palette is not on-screen, press F7 and click on the Channels tab to display it. Then click on the Save selection as channel icon at the bottom of the Channels palette.

System 7.5.x and higher comes with Modern Memory Manager and Virtual Memory options. Although Adobe Systems discourages users quite strongly in the documentation from running Photoshop 4 with Virtual Memory on, if you run multiple applications, there will be more overall memory to allocate to the applications other than Photoshop. Photoshop does not "see" virtual memory, and thus cannot benefit from it, but the OS and other applications can. In terms of performance, we noticed a very nominal difference between Photoshop speed running with Virtual Memory turned on, and with it off.
